Why Newton-area businesses need a Google Business Profile

It’s free, it shows up before your website does, and most local businesses haven’t finished setting theirs up.

When someone searches for “plumber near me” or “bakery in Newton,” the first thing they see usually isn’t a website. It’s a map with three businesses pinned on it. Those listings come from Google Business Profile, and it’s one of the most valuable free tools a local business has.

01 What a Google Business Profile is

It’s the panel that shows your hours, phone number, photos, reviews and directions when someone looks you up on Google Search or Google Maps. Many people call, get directions or read your reviews right from that panel without ever visiting your website.

That’s why it matters so much. For a lot of local searches, your profile is the first impression, and your website is the second.

02 Why it matters for local businesses

  • It shows up first. The map listings appear above most regular search results for local searches.
  • It’s free. There’s no cost to create, verify or update your profile.
  • It builds trust. Reviews, photos and up-to-date hours tell people you’re real, active and worth calling.
  • It sends people to you. Calls, direction requests and website visits all come straight from the listing.

03 What a complete profile looks like

Most businesses have a profile, but a lot of them stopped halfway. Google favors profiles that are complete and active, so these are worth filling in:

BasicsName, address, phone and hours. They should match your website exactly, including holiday hours.
CategoryYour primary category. Pick the most specific one that fits, then add a few secondary categories.
ServicesWhat you offer and where. List your services and the towns you serve, in plain words customers would search for.
PhotosReal pictures. Your storefront, your team, your work. Real photos do better than stock images.
Quick check you can do todaySearch Google for your business name. If you see a panel with “Own this business?” your profile hasn’t been claimed yet, and anyone could be suggesting edits to it.

04 How I set it up for clients

  1. Claim and verify the profile. Google usually asks for a short video or a postcard.
  2. Fill in every section, match the details to the website, and add real photos.
  3. Link the profile to the right page on the website and make sure the site loads fast on phones.
  4. Set up an easy review link so happy customers can leave a review in one click.

A finished profile won’t put you at the top overnight, but it’s the foundation every other local SEO effort is built on. And unlike ads, it keeps working whether you look at it or not.
